History of Ft. Carson
Ft. Carson was created just after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1942. The city of Colorado Springs bought the land south of the city and donated it to the nation's war department. Immediately, construction began and the first building was complete in 1942. The establishment was named Camp Carson in honor of General Christopher Carson, an explorer from the 1800s.
There were over 11,000 workers employed at the peak of construction on the new camp. Facilities were established for over 35,173 enlisted soldiers, 1,800 officers and 590 nurses. The camp ran strong for many years. However, following the end of World War II, camp activity began to decline. By 1946, many thought the camp would even be closed. Then, the Korean War increased camp activity once more.
In 1954, Camp Carson officially became Ft. Carson. Even more land was purchased. Today, Ft. Carson has some of the most beautiful scenery in the area. It is also one of the most requested stations by those in the US Army.
